"Last Christmas" is the sixth episode of season 4 of Emily in Paris, and the 36th episode overall. Last Christmas serves as the part two premiere.
Synopsis[]
After a last-minute change in Christmas plans, Emily detours to a ski-chalet in the French Alps, where a day on the slopes takes a bad turn.
Plot[]
It's officially Christmas season in Paris, and Sylvie toasts Agence Grateau for another successful year, toasting to the new year. Sylvie isn't sure if she should thank Emily or blame her for everything that has happened, but it wouldn't have been the same without her. Emily tries to raise client issues with Sylvie, but Sylvie's holiday has officially started.
Emily and Julien marvel at Luc's ice skating skills. She's leaving for Chicago tomorrow. Julien has a date for Christmas - he comes around just once a year for the holidays. Gabriel arrives, so Emily wishes her friends a Merry Christmas before joining her boyfriend on the ice. She misses the snow and can't wait to be back in Chicago. She wishes he could come with her, but he can't leave the restaurant for that long. He doesn't have much family so he's spent the past several holidays with Camille's. He asks if she's okay that he's spending Christmas with her family again, and she is since he's having a baby with Camille. Emily wants to make Christmas memories with Gabriel, and he thinks this one is pretty good.
Emily packs her suitcase for Chicago as Mindy critiques her overpacking. The Cooper's go hard for Christmases. Mindy will be at the apartment for the holiday's since she's not joining Nico and his family in St. Bart. She's going to throw her usual Orphan Christmas Party. Benoît and Étienne will be there to sing a few songs. She insists that, despite what Emily claims to have seen at the masquerade ball, Benoît is just her friend and bandmate. Emily warns her to stay away from the mistletoe, which makes Mindy pensive for a moment.
Emily arrives at the airport on Christmas Eve, learning that she's been upgraded to business class as a gift from Sylvie. Emily calls Sylvie and thanks her for upgrading her flight. She gushes over the luxuries of the airport spa. She starts discussing work - Sylvie tells her to relax, unplug, and be quiet. Emily raids the food bar when a PA announcements reveals her flight has been canceled for inclement weather.
Gabriel walks the commune of Megève with Camille, Gerard, and Louise. He won't let Camille carry anything since she's pregnant. She invites him to a private dinner later in their trip. Gabriel and Gerard leave to pick up their order, while Louise shares her happiness with Camille that her relationship with Gabriel is working. After all, Gabriel is here with Camille and not Emily. When Gabriel returns, Louise thanks him for helping with the dinner. He pauses to answer a call from Emily, and Camille hangs back to hear. Emily tells him that her flight to Chicago is canceled. He offers to come back to Paris, but Louise is upset by the idea as she "needs his help" with dinner. Gerard recommends that Emily join them, which causes a bit of an argument with him and his wife. He takes the phone from Gabriel and invites Emily. He will not accept no for an answer. Camille tries to hide her disappointment. Gabriel makes sure she's okay with Emily coming, and she insists it is.
Sylvie is making dinner while on the phone with Héloise, who is upset her daughter is making food for Laurent and his "illegitimate" daughter. Sylvie insists it was her idea because she never knew about Laurent's daughter until she was 17, she lives in New York, and they never see each other. Héloise refuses to join them because she's a college girl from New York. Sylvie aggressively stabs her turkey with a butcher knife.
Emily arrives in Megève and gleefully greets Gabriel. He walks her to the chalet.
Louise, Timothée, and Camille are playing a game when Emily arrives. She thanks them for having her and hopes she isn't imposing. Camille is glad she can spend the holidays with her family instead. Timothée brings up the wedding TikTok, reminding her it's not personal but art. When she takes off her jacket, she's wearing a light-up ugly Christmas sweater, a tradition for her family. This confuses the French people in the room, and none of them take her up on the offer to wear one.
Laurent worries he should have booked his daughter a hotel, but Sylvie knows it's only for a few nights. He reveals his daughter is interviewing for a job in the city in fashion, so she'll be staying until she's settled. This is news to Sylvie, who tries her best to brush it off. Her turkey is burning and she rushes off to a blackened bird. When she returns, Genevieve is in her living room. They exchange pleasantries and kisses. Genevieve thanks them for having her and is grateful.
Emily and Camille's family sit for dinner, with Emily realizing the different traditions in France. They leave their shoes by the fire for Saint Nicolas instead of stockings. Gerard explains the cruel, violent man who accompanies Santa and whips bad children. Camille tells Louise to be nice in French.
Sylvie, Laurent, and Genevieve sit for dinner at a nice restaurant as Sylvie attempts to learn more about her stepdaughters life. She has an interview next week for an assistant position for Carine Roitfeld. Sylvie offers to put in a good work for her. It's always been Genevieve's dream to work and live in Paris. They toast to a great - and speedy - future.
Gabriel joins Camille for a chat while Emily FaceTimes her parents. She was excited to have him to herself for Christmas. Emily comes down since the cell reception is spotty. Gabriel reminds her they're going into town to see the city. When Emily leaves to get her things, he invites Camille along, but she doesn't want to go on the same walk she used to have with him every year.
In the morning, Sylvie stands in her living room which is a disaster from Genevieve's messy ways. Sylvie is determined to get Genevieve a job with Carine so she'll get her own apartment. She heads into her office and calls Carine. Laurent tidies up a bit until Sylvie comes out with news that Carine told Sylvie to take Genevieve.
Emily emerges from the chalet with hot chocolate. Gerard is stretching before their skiing trip. He advises her to do the same, but she isn't planning on riding the slopes. Timothée joins her and remarks how Gabriel sneaking out with a mistress on the holidays is very French. She corrects Timothée that she's Gabriel's girlfriend, not his mistress. Timothée tells her to think about where Gabriel is right now - with Camille's family at the holidays instead of Emily's. Things won't get easier with a baby. He wants her to have more. Gabriel and Camille walk out laughing. They insist she join them on the skiing trip, with Camille even offering her clothes, so Emily agrees.
On the slopes, Emily takes a photo for her Instagram then joins Camille and Gabriel at the beginner slope. He tells Camille to take it easy and she starts bickering back, but notices he's distracted with Emily, so she takes off down the slope. He rushes after her, leaving Emily stranded at the top of the slope. She tries to follow but wipes out several times. She loses her phone down the hill.
Emily is wiped out on the snow when an Italian man finds her, stopping to ask if she's okay. He helps her up and offers to help her, a beautiful woman, down the hill. He promises to go very slowly with her. He holds onto her from behind to guide her down the slope. They make it safely and she thanks him, learning his name is Marcello. They smile at one another, he blows her a kiss, and skis off. Emily sees Camille and Gabriel talking by the cliff and angrily takes off her skis. She storms over to them and yells at Gabriel for leaving her on the mountain to die with a lost phone. He was worried about Camille and the baby, whom Emily reminds him is a an adult woman who self-identifies as an expert skier. Camille starts to interrupt and Emily lashes out at her. Gabriel thinks this does include Camille, since she's having his baby. Emily knows this already and knows he will always choose Camille, as he should. But Emily can't be the person who constantly pulls him away from his family. He tries to reassure her that she's his girlfriend, but Emily sees herself as more of a mistress. They keep trying to make this work but it's not going to. She's going back to Paris because coming here was a mistake, or maybe it wasn't. She walks away as Gabriel calls after her. Camille watches the scene unfold.
Genevieve joins Sylvie at the table to give her a small gift. She speaks in French, having been practicing, but nervous to speak it in front of Sylvie until now. This impresses Sylvie, who happily opens the gift to find a vintage camera. Genevieve is grateful for everything Sylvie has done so far. Sylvie has to break it to Genevieve that Carine has already found someone for the job. Genevieve feels like a fool. Sylvie offers her a job at Agence Grateau, which she accepts. Laurent comes out and hears the news. He asks Sylvie about it, and she blames the Christmas spirit. She now has to pay the girl a high enough salary to get off her couch.
Mindy hosts a Christmas party at her apartment. Julien arrives with his "Christmas boyfriend" Dominique. Dominique heads for drinks, and Julien tells Mindy that Dominique is moving to Paris and wants to give them a shot - and he's not happy about the idea. Dominique's been there one day and wants to play house, already asking to go to mass. Étienne fawns over Dominique from afar, and Mindy advises Julien to speak with Dominique before he's someone else's. She watches them go and Benoît greets her. They have awkward laughter and conversation. Étienne, upset that Julien "stole" Dominique, accuses Mindy and Benoît of eye-fucking. They insist they aren't and Mindy awkwardly ushers him to the couch to play a song. They sing a Christmas carol together.
Emily rides the train back to Paris.
Camille and Louise watch Gabriel sitting by the fire, morose. Louise is happy that Gabriel broke up with Emily since it means he can be with Camille. She worries he won't want to be with her even if he's not with Emily. Louise encourages her daughter to talk with Gabriel. Camille joins him by the fireplace and emotionally says they need to talk about the baby.
Emily the streets of Paris, heartbreak and sadness clear on her face. She pauses to look at a church and Alfie greets her from across the square. They reconnect as she catches him up on the last bit of her life. There's a reason things never worked with her and Gabriel, so she finally admitted it. She's so happy to see Alfie, who is doing well despite everything that happened. He took their time apart to fall in love with Paris. She invites him to Mindy's party, but he's going to church where his girlfriend and her family are inside waiting. Their relationship is pretty serious. Emily, emotional, tells him to go inside and that she's happy for him. He wishes her a Merry Christmas then hurries off inside. Emily watches him go and sobs in heartbreak. Suddenly, snow begins to fall around her, and she looks up with a hopeful smile.
