Season 2[]
Alfie and Emily met in French class, where they become reluctant assignment partners. The assignment forces them to learn more about one another, though Alfie is sure he knows Emily's type already. She insists they meet to discuss their assignment, which Alfie doesn't plan to take seriously. He makes his discontent for Paris clear, which clashes with her romantic and idealistic view of the city. They have a playful yet bickering relationship, as Alfie challenges her to have fun and not take everything seriously. When Alfie delivers his reading, he mocks her style and sense of self. The action offends Emily, though he apologizes as he meant it as a joke since she doesn't have fun. She takes this to heart and sets out to prove him wrong. She ultimately proves him wrong by offering him a ride to class on the back of a Vespa.
Emily also helps him realize the city has more to offer if he'll let it. As he learns more about her job, he becomes fascinated and finds it infinitely more interesting than his. He muses that her job is attending fancy parties on boats while he's stuck behind a desk in an office. The more they text, the more the people in Emily's life begin to notice her smile. Luc in particular notes that she's doing her "chef smile" referring to Emily's previous fling with a chef.
During a heatwave in Paris, Alfie invites Emily to his luxury apartment with air conditioning. He admits that he doesn't always joke about things, especially when he's serious about them. Emily questions what he's serious about, and he's serious about her. The pair kiss and have sex. Emily leaves his apartment for work in the morning, but the pair plan to text each other. Emily becomes paranoid when he doesn't return or read her multiple calls or texts. That afternoon, Gabriel calls her to Chez Lavaux since Alfie is there looking for her. She's confused, and he reveals that she took his phone that morning. Emily realizes the phone was in the pocket of a jacket that she borrowed that morning. Emily returns it to him conditionally, as she wants to delete the messages she sent. He playfully realizes she likes him. As they explore their relationship, Alfie immerses himself in her friend group, including her ex-fling Gabriel. When Alfie learns about Emily and Gabriel's past, he confronts Emily. He admits that his feelings for her are real. She assures him that Gabriel is in the past.
