1 Place de L'Estrapade, also known as Maison Moreau, is an old apartment building in 5th arrondissement of Paris, commonly referred to as the Latin Quarter. It is the residence of Emily Cooper, Gabriel and Mindy Chen that is looked after by Gardienne and owned by an unnamed rental company.
History[]
Season 1[]
In Emily in Paris, Emily Cooper moves into the building after being sent there by her American company Gilbert Group. She meets Gilles Dufour, a rental agent who helps her move into her new Chambre de Bonne. Emily struggles to understand the floor levels, believing that the fifth floor is the fourth, so she tries to open an apartment door that isn't hers. She is greeted by her neighbor Gabriel. That night, she accidentally causes a power outage in the building while trying to use her vibrator.
Season 2[]
In French Revolution, Camille moves into Gabriel's apartment upon rekindling their relationship.
Tenants[]
- Emily Cooper and Mindy Chen - Chambre de Bonne, 501
- Gabriel and Camille - Apartment, 401
- Gardienne - Caretaker, unknown apartment
Notes and Trivia[]
- Place de L'Estrapade is named after a form of torture used on the site during the Renaissance times.[1]
- Emily and Mindy live in apartment 501, directly above Gabriel's apartment. According to Gilles Dufour, it is a "Chambre de bonne", which is a room on the top floor of a French apartment building that was traditionally intended for domestic workers of middle-class families. Nowadays, it is generally considered to be a cost-efficient rental option for young people.
- However, there are some inconsistencies. The building has seven floors, hence Apartment 501 is not a chambre de bonne. Also, Emily's room is much larger than a typical "Chambre de bonne" and it includes a bathroom, which most chambres de bonne don't have.
- After the first season was filmed, the real apartment building renovated and redid the iconic staircase. This would have broken continuity for the show, so production had to build the stairs on a set for the second season.
